NYnet is a provider of broadband connectivity to the public and private sector throughout North Yorkshire.
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) created NYnet Ltd with funding from Yorkshire Forward and Government Office Yorkshire and Humber. This represented new thinking in the UK about the role of the public sector in providing leadership in harnessing the capability of advanced broadband to stimulate economic regeneration, deliver services to citizens and gain greater public sector efficiencies.
The full benefit of aggregating connectivity requirements was only the first step in optimising public sector spend to benefit the community. Further benefits to small business have accrued following the ADSL enablement of all of the remaining exchanges in North Yorkshire, giving the sub region a broadband take-up rate that is higher than the national average.
NYnet now provides a range of products and services to both Public Sector and Business Users as well as working with NYCC and Community Internet Service Providers on residential services.
The next step is the commitment by NYCC to provide all small businesses and citizen’s of North Yorkshire with high speed broadband by 2017. This will be achieved through funding from Broadband Delivery United Kingdom (BDUK) and match funding through the European Regional Development Fund. An extensive public procurement process is underway which will conclude in June 2012.
